Ministerial Foreword
The Rt Hon David Lammy MP
Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs
This annual impact report captures the enormous value of the Chevening programme. The UK continues to invest in the leaders of tomorrow, young people whose drive and innovation will help identify solutions to the pressing challenges of our time.
In March, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar and I sat down with a group of Chevening scholars from India. They were a hugely impressive group of young leaders from all over India, pursuing studies in all sorts of subjects across the UK.
It was inspiring to hear about how they intend to use their time with us to deliver positive change when they return to India. And it was clear that we in Britain would be learning a lot from their diverse perspectives. Through our investment in them, we are deepening our ties with a close friend like India and showcasing the strengths of our higher education system.
This is not an isolated example. Since becoming Foreign Secretary, I have met many Chevening alumni from around the world. You will find detailed in this report the contributions of many more.
I am proud of the transformative effect Chevening scholarships have on individual lives and alumni’s communities. And I am committed to using the programme to reconnect Britain with the world and build a better future.
Dive in to the report
At a time when the world is becoming more insecure, the UK needs to draw on a range of tools to advance our priorities and extend our influence. The Chevening programme is one of those tools – one which draws on the UK’s power to attract and persuade others.
